Determining When to Buy the Dip
The term “buy the dip” is commonly used in trading. It refers to the practice of waiting to buy a security when it pulls back from an upward trend. This allows the trader to buy at a discount as well as take advantage of the security returning to its upward trend.
If using an indicator to help us determine when a security has dipped, we can look to buy once an indicator level is initially penetrated or when that level is passed back through. For example, You can buy once an RSI first penetrates 30 or wait for the indicator to cross back through 30 to the upside. There are pros and cons to each approach.
